About us

Our story began in 1937 when Alabama established 17 markets across the state, and we've been a bustling hub for fresh, local produce ever since. Even during the COVID-19 lockdown, we adapted with resilience and creativity.  We continue that legacy through innovative partnerships with local businesses and events meant to showcase our market and vendors.

Our previous site, with its charming old building, was established in 1984. It was one of the two remaining original markets, making it one of the oldest in the state. Today, we are excited to build on that legacy with a brand-new permanent facility, which held its grand opening in May of 2025. This updated space enhances the market experience while preserving the welcoming atmosphere we’ve always been known for. The new facility features outdoor cooling and heating vents, making the market comfortable to shop year-round. With space for over 30 vendors, plus overflow tent space on the lawn, there’s more room than ever for farmers, bakers, artists, and makers. Along with a large enough footprint to host community events and weddings. A vibrant community mural and expanded layout reflect the diversity, creativity, and spirit of Decatur.

The market is a unique partnership between the City of Decatur and Morgan County, as outlined in the City of Decatur Municipal Code Chapter 2 Section 15. The land, owned by the railroad, is leased to the city for a symbolic $1 per year. The county supports us with a small stipend for advertising and operations, while the city provides maintenance services. Our primary income comes from table rentals, which have been one of the most affordable in the area. We are also one of the few markets in the state equipped with a pea sheller!

Sanctioned by the Farmers Market Authority, our board consists of members selected by the city and county, serving on a volunteer basis. Our meetings are open to the public, reflecting our commitment to transparency and community involvement. Farmers guide us on market operations, and our paid manager ensures everything runs smoothly, from collecting table rentals to maintaining facilities and addressing concerns. We also conduct farm visits to ensure that our produce is locally grown.

Farmers markets like ours are vital for beginner farmers, offering a low-barrier entry point to start, test, and grow their businesses. We stimulate the local economy, increase access to fresh and nutritious food, and promote healthy communities. Studies show that food grown locally with access to indigenous pollinators is healthier and can reduce allergies.

At the Morgan County Decatur Farmers Market, you’ll find more than just food. You’ll find a family friendly, inclusive gathering place where you can meet your farmer, know your food, and connect with your community. We are proud to be an inclusive hub for farmers, bakers, artists, and artisans, and we look forward to continuing these long-standing traditions in our new facility.

Join us at the Morgan County Decatur Farmers Market - where history, community, and fresh local food come together.
